New Building: Living Our Values

TBI's theme for 5766 is "Living Our Values." In the case of the new building, there are three important community values at stake:

  • Sustainability
  • Accessibility
  • Community Involvement

Sustainability Means:

Rehabilitation of Urban Site

Healthy Indoor Environment

  • Eliminate toxic off-gassing (VOC)
  • Good mechanical ventilation
  • Natural ventilation
  • Natural daylight

Commitment to Earth-Friendly Products

  • Rapidly renewable resources
  • Recycled and recyclable materials
  • Locally produced products (reducing energy use and pollution, and supporting our local economy)
  • Long-lasting materials and low-maintenance materials

Energy Efficiency

  • Building envelope (insulation and glazing)
  • HVAC Systems (high efficiency burners, economizers, controls)
  • Lighting System (emphasize daylighting and efficient controls)
  • Aim to exceed energy code requirements by up to 30%

Renewable Energy

  • Photovoltaics (solar power)
  • Should be free with all the available incentives and investor support
  • 100% cost recovery in tax credits in five years donors
  • TBI gets up to 15% of needed electricity at no or low cost during lifetime of system (30 years+)
  • Potential for TBI to inherit the system cost—free

Low Water Usage

  • Low flow plumbing fixtures (faucets, toilets, sinks, etc.)
  • Storm water retention for irrigation
  • Water-efficient landscaping

The Sustainability Advisory Committee will be chaired by Jan Fillinger.

Accessibility Means:

  • Accessible front entry and school entry via elevator or sidewalk
  • Elevator from parking lot to all floors
  • Exceed ADA requirements for all alter-abled people
  • Accessible playground and equipment

The Accessibility Advisory Committee will be coordinated by Susan Sygall.

Community Involvement means:

Building-Integrated Art

  • The "Rock" brought back from Israel
  • Judaic art
  • Selection of finishes
  • Community tiles or plaques
  • Relocated stained glass windows (in 2nd floor library)
  • Landscaping
  • Water feature
  • "History Wall"

"Barn-Raising"

  • Opportunities for community labor
  • Opportunities for community-donated materials

The Artisans Advisory Committee will be coordinated by Shonna Husbands-Hankin. The Community Labor Advisory Committee Chair(s) is yet to be determined.
