An Ongoing Work in Progress

Who are we? In 1995, a handful of women saw a need for an organization where women of all ages, lifestyles, and interests could gather. They had a common goal of wanting to foster camaraderie across the generations and promote community involvement in a wide range of service activities. We are Jewish and non-Jewish, young mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends of the community, students, wives and partners, activists, newcomers wanting to meet people, old-timers sharing the legacy of the past, stay-at-home moms, single working mothers, artists, retirees, entrepreneurs – well, as you can see, we are every woman.

What does the Sisterhood do? In the past we initiated the Shalom Wagon to greet newcomers to the community, Nosh & Schmooze parties for folks to mingle, community-wide summer picnics, and an annual garage sale to raise money. We’ve brought speakers, held cooking and craft classes, game nights, published a successful cookbook, held Chanukah parties and antique appraisals, baked for High Holiday onegs, held art shows, and joined in with TBI’s social service groups for a variety of charitable activities. Some of these programs have been adopted by TBI, others have faded, and others are still ongoing. (Cookbooks are still only $18 and make great gifts! Please check our column monthly for the next activity coming your way.

What can you do? We need all types of members. There is the strong, silent type who prefers the background but donates generously to our membership and scholarship funds; there is the woman, new to town, who’d like to meet other women in a cozy and informal environment; there is the woman who was a founding member, still active but now not always able to do and be everything for everyone; there is the woman who is a member and would like to help out, but doesn’t know how; and there is the woman who wants to add her voice, ideas and efforts to maintain this legacy. We want you all. No one is turned away for lack of discretionary funds and all requests are kept in strictest confidence.

Annual membership is $18 (Chai) or $36 (Mitzvah). A lifetime membership is now available for $360.

Please contact Sandra Luks, 541.343.6296, with any questions about the Sisterhood, or to join.
