Community Sisterhood of Temple Beth Israel

Here's what's happening in TBI Sisterhood:

It is with much sadness that we offer our condolences to Katharine Lovinger’s family on her passing. Katharine was an active member of Sisterhood and we will miss her very much.

Thank you to Sisterhood members Amy Fine, Judi Kandell, Sue Landis, Sandra Luks, Carlene Mantell, Flora Codman and Gloria Ostrach, who prepared the lunch for Katharine’s family after the service.

Mitzvah Day will be at the home of Cynthia Lewinsohn, co-hosted by Marsha Miller, on Sunday, November 9, 2-4 pm. We will be collecting donations for First Place. A list of items needed will be included in an upcoming mailing.

Application forms are available in the TBI office for the merit Simcha Scholarship given to Talmud Torah/Shalhevet students in grades 3-12. Contact Carlene at 686-2055 for more information

Call Gloria Ostrach to purchase the Sisterhood Cookbook, Mi dor L’dor for only $18. They make great gifts.

Contact Leona Maltz for membership information.

See the Sisterhood Calendar for upcoming events.

An Ongoing Work in Progress

Who are we? In 1995, a handful of women saw a need for an organization where women of all ages, lifestyles, and interests could gather.  They had a common goal of wanting to foster camaraderie across the generations and promote community involvement in a wide range of service activities.  We are Jewish and non-Jewish, young mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends of the community, students, wives and partners, activists, newcomers wanting to meet people, old-timers sharing the legacy of the past, stay-at-home moms, single working mothers, artists, retirees, entrepreneurs – well, as you can see, we are every woman.

What does the Sisterhood do? In the past we initiated the Shalom Wagon to greet newcomers to the community, Nosh & Schmooze parties for folks to mingle, community-wide summer picnics, and an annual garage sale to raise money.  We’ve brought speakers, held cooking and craft classes, game nights, published a successful cookbook, held Chanukah parties and antique appraisals, baked for High Holiday onegs, held art shows, and joined in with TBI’s social service groups for a variety of charitable activities.  Some of these programs have been adopted by TBI, others have faded, and others are still ongoing.  (Cookbooks are still only $18 and make great gifts! Please check our column monthly for the next activity coming your way.

What can you do? We need all types of members. There is the strong, silent type who prefers the background but donates generously to our membership and scholarship funds; there is the woman, new to town, who’d like to meet other women in a cozy and informal environment; there is the woman who was a founding member, still active but now not always able to do and be everything for everyone; there is the woman who is a member and would like to help out, but doesn’t know how; and there is the woman who wants to add her voice, ideas and efforts to maintain this legacy. We want you all. No one is turned away for lack of discretionary funds and all requests are kept in strictest confidence.

Membership is $18 a year, $36 for a double Chai membership. A lifetime membership is now available for $360. Please call Sue Landis with any questions about the Sisterhood, or to join.
