Fostering camaraderie across generations and promoting community involvement through service activities
Our Sisterhood is a community of women joined together to accomplish more than each of us could do alone. Sisterhood offers an opportunity for women to share friendships and the work of our hands, hearts, and spirits for the benefit of our community.
We sponsor a variety of projects and events for our members’ enjoyment and for the benefit of the entire TBI community. Our Sunday Cafe provides an opportunity to meet and shmooze while enjoying bagels and other treats. We invite speakers on a variety of topics to educate and entertain us. We sponsor Simcha Scholarships that send kids to camp and to conferences all over the world. We have offered Jewish cooking classes to Talmud Torah students and continue to be strong supporters of the Jewish Federation’s annual Mitzvah Day.
Sisterhood has traditionally taken a special interest in TBI’s kitchen since it is used by our whole community. We purchased a new freezer and had several new cabinets installed recently. We love to partner with other TBI service groups as we did with the Cabaret we co-sponsored with Brotherhood and the Queer Chavurah. It was grand fun that filled the social hall to overflowing and exceeded all our expectations.

Helping Asylum Seekers Right Here, Right Now

You will have another opportunity hear from a local group that is helping asylum seekers. GLAD (Grupo Latino de Accion Directa) Board member and TBI congregant, Reuben Zahler will speak to us about two important GLAD programs, GLAD Pro Bono and Justice Kids.
You may have read about JusticeKids in the Register Guard recently. JusticeKids are high school age volunteers that help asylum seekers. GLAD recruits and trains local teenagers to work with asylum seekers by helping them explain their experiences in an organized manner, so the immigration attorneys representing them can do so effectively. The GLAD Pro Bono program consists of staff and volunteers who recruit attorneys who will work free of charge to help asylum seekers prepare their cases.

Watch the PBS documentary by filmmaker and Sisterhood member Miriam Persoff. The moving film, Out Loud, follows the Oakland Gay Men’s Choir during its European tour. Miriam was one of the early women in broadcasting, starting at CBS all-news radio. She covered some of the big events of the time, including the assassination of Robert Kennedy.
Cannabis 101
April 19, 2:00pm
Canabis 101 will be presented by clinical nutritionist and registered herbalist Jakob Sletteland. Jakob will discuss the efficacy of using marijuana and CBD products, or Cannabinoids, to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, and address the side effects of cancer treatments. Jakob emphasizes the triad of lifestyle, nutrition and herbal therapeutics to address the many health complaints associated with our modern life.

It’s a wonderful space for schmoozing with old friends and making new ones! Sisterhood wants to continue hosting Sunday Cafes at least once or twice a month, but we need your help. Sandra Luks
Sisterhood commissioned a plaque to be created in honor of our dear Sandra Luks. We hired well-known local artist, John Rose to design a cheery glass mosaic to be hung in TBI’s kitchen. It says:

Sisterhood Simcha Scholarship Fund
The Simcha Scholarship is available to children in Lane County through the senior year of high school. It may be used to attend Jewish themed functions, educational programs, and/or camps in the United States, Israel, or other foreign destinations.
